about

statement

My work embraces unobtrusiveness, non-dualism, and spontaneity, emanating from the inherent interconnectedness of our existence as part of the natural world. It is a celebration and tribute to the present moment.

The physical essence of my creations resides in clay and naturally occurring oxides—the same primal materials that our ancestors wielded to convey their artistic expressions. This medium, rooted in antiquity, has evolved over time, with texture and pattern serving as enduring motifs. Much like rhythm in music, pattern in my work functions as a visual rhythm, with silence between the elements creating a spatial harmony.

Western fine arts, steeped in Hellenistic influence, have conventionally centered around eliciting ’emotions’ —a movement or reaction. In contrast, Eastern arts have traversed a distinct trajectory throughout history. Rather than provoking emotions, my work aspires to soothe those emotions, often rooted in profound attachment and division that shroud the beauty of existence. And when confronting specific conflicts, my aim is to unravel the intricate knots they comprise, employing mirroring techniques and posing thought-provoking questions to engage the viewer.

biography

Leo Nas, or 原森, meaning Old Growth, was born in Spain in 1987, yet he eschews any fixed geographical or cultural identification. Throughout his twenties and thirties, post-graduation, he worked as a teacher in different countries of Europe and Asia, dedicating entire years to travel and explore the globe’s cultural richness.

Inspired by a deepening love for ceramics cultivated during his time in Japan and over half a decade in Taiwan, as well as by his own travel experiences and interactions, Leo Nas began to actively pursue ceramic knowledge. He started engaging in copious intensive courses, attending international workshops and masterclasses, and avidly reading, all while consistently working in his personal studio.

He openly admits to lacking a sense of attachment to any specific place, language, or tradition, though he aligns himself closely with those emphasizing the study and appreciation of nature, non-duality, empathy, and harmony. Leo Nas currently develops his body of work from a studio in the EU, which he shares with his partner, watercolor artist CiaoYin Luo. He maintains a presence on social media platforms and sells his artwork through this site.

technical considerations

I work with stoneware and china clay, some of which I personally extract. I guide the materials through various processes until achieving a form that satisfies me. At this point, I allow my work to dry slowly for no less than a week.

All the glazes used in my studio are personally mixed, with only food-safe glazes applied to functional ware. Creating these vitreous coatings involves combining naturally occurring oxides, clays, and ashes, utilizing the Unity Molecular Formula to predict their behaviour. Afterward, I rigorously test and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses before application.

Each piece is fired at least twice in the kiln, sometimes more. The initial bisque firing transforms the fragile, bone-dry clay into porous ceramic material, ready for glazing. Subsequently, a high-temperature firing up to cone 10 or 1285°C allows the body to mature, and the glaze to melt over its surface.

Finally, I diamond sand the foot or base to ensure a smooth contact with surfaces. Additional techniques may be often employed to achieve the final appearance.

packaging

All my pieces are shipped worldwide with insurance coverage.

I handle the packing and shipping personally. Each item undergoes meticulous packaging—carefully wrapped in multiple layers of foam wrap sheets and recycled cushioning paper. Bubble wrap is employed for additional protection when deemed necessary. Subsequently, items are securely sealed in recycled cardboard boxes, snugly filled with biodegradable chips. Inside, you’ll discover a personal thank-you card expressing my gratitude to the buyer.

In my commitment to sustainability, I keep experimenting with various materials to assess box durability, actively seeking eco-friendly alternatives to minimize plastic usage.

For larger pieces, a similar meticulous packing approach is employed, utilizing robust boxes, thick foam separators, and including a certificate of authenticity alongside the previously mentioned items.
